Science Expedition in Norway’s Deep-Sea Mining Frontier
In summer 2025, the Greenpeace ship Witness ventured into the Norwegian Sea’s newly designated deep‑sea mining zones. Onboard scientists executed combined visual and acoustic surveys, documenting cetacean species—including sperm whales and northern bottlenose whales—in areas slated for mineral extraction. Their findings underscore the critical role these seafloor ecosystems play for whales, highlighting the threat posed by industrial noise, sediment plumes, and seabed disturbance, and reinforcing Greenpeace’s call for a moratorium on deep‑sea mining pending further environmental assessment.

The Story of Mrs Kanno - Fukushima 7 years after the nuclear accident
Evacuee and Fukushima survivor, Mrs. Kanno at her house in Shimo-Tsushima, Japan, watches Greenpeace radiation specialists Mai Suzuki and Laurence Bergot measuring for contamination around her house. Located in the exclusion zone of Namie, Fukushima prefecture, this area is closed for people to return to. However, the Japanese government plans to open a small area of Tsushima as early as 2023. The levels of radiation measured by Greenpeace in this highly contaminated area mean that it will be many decades and beyond the end of the century before radiation levels will even approach government targets.
